Barcode lookup reduces the identity guess for a specific package. Photo scanning works where no code exists, but it has to infer more.
When barcode scanning is the better fit
Barcode scanning can still fail when a record is missing or old. Confirm that the returned product and serving match the package.

- The current Nutrition Facts serving can be checked.
- The food is difficult to distinguish visually from similar products.
When photo scanning is the better fit
Photo scanning has more uncertainty around hidden ingredients, cooking fat, and portion depth. It is a starting point rather than a direct measurement.
- The food is plated, homemade, unpackaged, or from a restaurant.
- Several visible components need a quick first draft.
- You can review and correct identified items afterward.
- An approximate entry is more useful than leaving the meal unlogged.
Use both for mixed meals
A packed lunch might include a barcoded drink, a homemade sandwich, and a piece of fruit. Scan the drink's code, use a saved recipe or photo for the sandwich, and choose a generic food record for the fruit.
The best workflow is not loyalty to one scanner. It is choosing the method with the strongest available information for each component.
